COVID-19 India: Surge in Cases, Causes, Variants, and Precautions

As of May 27, 2025, COVID-19 India is experiencing a notable increase in cases, with the Health Ministry reporting 1,010 active cases nationwide. The surge is primarily driven by Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Kerala accounts for 43% of active cases, followed by Maharashtra at 21%, with Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu contributing 10%, 8%, and 7%, respectively. A new subvariant, NB.1.8.1, identified in a Tamil Nadu sample, is under review by INSACOG, India’s genome sequencing consortium.

While this subvariant shows no signs of increased severity, its emergence highlights the ongoing evolution of COVID-19 India.

Why Is COVID-19 India Seeing a Spike?

Multiple factors are fueling the resurgence of COVID-19 India. Waning immunity from prior infections and vaccinations is a primary concern.

As immunity fades, individuals—particularly the elderly and those with weakened immune systems—become more susceptible to reinfection, posing risks for severe outcomes in vulnerable groups.

The virus continues to evolve, with new subvariants like NB.1.8.1, a descendant of the JN.1 lineage, emerging. Currently, JN.1 and BA.2 dominate COVID-19 India cases, with JN.1 listed as a Variant of Interest by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Seven other variants, including NB.1.8 and LF.7, are classified as Variants Under Monitoring, but none are deemed Variants of Concern.

Seasonal changes are also contributing. The early monsoon in many regions has increased humidity, creating favorable conditions for SARS-CoV-2 transmission, similar to seasonal flu and other respiratory viruses. Recent spikes in flu cases across Indian cities underscore this trend.

Additionally, reduced testing and genomic surveillance are hindering early detection. Since COVID-19 India was declared endemic, routine testing and sequencing have dropped significantly, allowing infections to spread undetected. The relaxation of public health measures, such as mask mandates and social distancing, further facilitates transmission, especially in densely populated areas.

The rise in COVID-19 India cases mirrors global patterns, particularly in Southeast Asia. Singapore, for instance, reported a 30% increase in cases in early May 2025. In India, the outbreak is concentrated in Kerala and Maharashtra, with six deaths reported since May 19 in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka. These deaths are not yet confirmed as COVID-19 India-related.

Should You Be Worried About COVID-19 India?

While case numbers remain low compared to previous waves, public health experts urge caution, especially for vulnerable populations. The Health Ministry plans to intensify testing for symptomatic individuals over the next two weeks to monitor COVID-19 India’s spread.

Those over 60 or with underlying conditions—such as diabetes, heart disease, or respiratory issues—should take precautionary measures, including wearing masks in crowded areas, practicing hand hygiene, and isolating if symptoms like fever, cough, or fatigue appear.

How to Stay Safe Amid COVID-19 India’s Surge

To protect yourself and others from COVID-19 India, follow these steps:

  • Wear masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, particularly in high-risk areas like Kerala and Maharashtra.
  • Practice hand hygiene by washing hands frequently or using sanitizers.
  • Isolate immediately if symptoms develop and seek testing promptly.
  • Stay informed about local case trends and adhere to Health Ministry guidelines.

The rise in COVID-19 India cases underscores the virus’s persistence as a public health challenge. By taking proactive measures, individuals can help curb the spread and protect vulnerable groups.

COVID-19 India remains a dynamic situation, requiring vigilance and adherence to recommended precautions to mitigate its impact.
