Biden Reemerges to Defend Social Security Against Trump Policy Agenda
Joe Biden is stepping back into the national spotlight this Tuesday, aiming to draw attention to what many consider a growing threat to Social Security under Donald Trump’s leadership.
The 82-year-old former president, who has stayed mostly silent since his departure from the White House in January, will deliver a major address in Chicago, targeting Trump’s recent moves that critics say could destabilize one of America’s most essential social programs.
A Critical Issue at a Critical Time
Speaking at the national conference for the Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD), Biden plans to underline the importance of preserving Social Security—a pillar for retirees, low-income families, and people with disabilities.
“Americans who contribute to Social Security throughout their working lives deserve dependable support,”said Rachel Buck, ACRD’s executive director.
“We’re honored to have President Biden address the future of this vital program.”

Trump’s Cuts Raise Alarm
Shortly after returning to office, Trump enacted deep staffing cuts across multiple agencies, with the Social Security Administration (SSA) losing thousands of workers.
Among the most controversial actions was a plan to lay off 7,000 SSA employees, and to introduce stricter identity verification requirements for benefit recipients—measures critics argue will increase red tape and delay essential services.
Additionally, Trump allowed the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, access to private Social Security data. Musk, one of Trump’s closest advisers, has publicly called Social Security “the largest Ponzi scheme ever”.
These aggressive changes have triggered lawsuits and a wave of concern among advocacy groups and beneficiaries alike.
System Glitches and Communication Failures
Alongside workforce reductions, users of the SSA’s “my Social Security” portal have reported increased outages and delays, while Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients—especially disabled seniors and low-income families—have received false notices stating they were no longer receiving benefits.
SSA officials later said the error was caused by a system malfunction, but for many already struggling, the damage was done.
Biden to Rally Bipartisan Support
Biden will be joined in Chicago by several prominent figures, including:
-
Martin O’Malley, former SSA administrator
-
Roy Blunt, former GOP Senator from Missouri
-
Debbie Stabenow, former Democratic Senator from Michigan
“Social Security is a commitment from one generation to the next,” said O’Malley.
“We thank President Biden for reinforcing that commitment at a time when it’s under real threat.”
Public Image and Political Future
Although Biden will remain mostly behind the scenes in his post-presidency, he still retains influence in shaping public discourse and could play a strategic role in Democratic fundraising and messaging ahead of the midterms.
Still, Biden left office with lackluster approval ratings, and his political brand suffered after his poor debate performance against Trump, which led to his decision not to seek re-election. Kamala Harris, who succeeded him on the Democratic ticket, was ultimately defeated in the general election.
A Gallup poll in January showed that only 39% of Americans held a favorable view of Biden, reflecting the persistent skepticism he faced during his presidency.
