Tragic Plane Crash Claims Lives of Dr. Joy Saini and Her Family En Route to Celebration

In a heartbreaking aviation accident, Dr. Joy Saini and her family lost their lives when their private aircraft went down in upstate New York. The group was on their way to the Catskill Mountains for a birthday celebration and the Passover holiday when the plane tragically crashed near Craryville around 12:06 p.m. on April 12, as confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Among the victims were:

  • Dr. Joy Saini, a renowned urogynecologist

  • Her husband, Dr. Michael Groff, a well-known neurosurgeon

  • Their children, Jared Groff and Karenna Groff

  • Jared’s partner, Alexia Couyutas Duarte

  • Karenna’s boyfriend, James Santoro

The aircraft, a Mitsubishi MU-2B-40, had taken off from Westchester County Airport in White Plains. Just prior to the crash, the pilot contacted air traffic control at Columbia County Airport, reporting a missed approach and requesting a new flight path.

💔 Who Was Dr. Joy Saini?

Dr. Joy Saini was more than a physician—she was a trailblazer in women’s pelvic health in the United States. She founded the Boston Pelvic Health and Wellness Center and was widely recognized for her expertise in reconstructive pelvic surgery.

  • A medical degree from University of Pittsburgh

  • Residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell

  • Fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) from NYU Medical Center

  • Double board certification from the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology

  • Recognition as one of the first certified urogynecologists when the specialty was formalized in 2013

Throughout her career, Dr. Saini held prestigious positions at institutions like:

  • UMass Memorial Medical Center – where she served as Associate Fellowship Program Director

  • NYU Medical Center and Indiana University Medical Center – where she contributed as a professor and attending physician

She was also a published researcher, contributing significantly to the field of urogynecology.

The family resided in Weston, where they lived a life of compassion, brilliance, and service.

  • Dr. Michael Groff served as the Executive Medical Director of Neurosciences at Rochester Regional Health, remembered for his clinical excellence and leadership.

  • Karenna Groff, their daughter, was an MIT soccer standout and named NCAA Woman of the Year in 2022.

  • Jared Groff, their son, worked as a paralegal.

A statement from Rochester Regional Health expressed profound sorrow and praised Dr. Groff’s legacy in advancing neuroscience.

We are in close contact with the Groff family and ask that their privacy be respected during this time of deep grief,” the statement read.
