India urgent push for trade deals under EAM Jaishankar

Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 90-day suspension on certain tariffs earlier this week, global markets experienced significant turbulence. Speaking at the Global Technology Summit, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar noted that the Trump administration has responded swiftly on discussions around a bilateral trade deal.

He emphasized that India is prepared to engage with “a heightened sense of urgency” in trade negotiations with the U.S., European Union, and the United Kingdom.

During his appearance at the summit, Jaishankar remarked that “under President Trump, the United States has undergone a fundamental shift in its approach to global trade.” Acknowledging the broader implications across major industries, he pointed out that the evolving U.S. tariff policy could be signaling an impending global economic slowdown.

Touching on the ongoing U.S.-China trade conflict, the minister highlighted how rising tariffs between the two superpowers have exacerbated tensions. Notably, China was excluded from the 90-day tariff pause and instead faced increased duties exceeding 140%, prompting Beijing to retaliate with its own 125% tariff hike.

Amid these developments, India remains in active negotiations with the Trump administration to finalize a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) aimed at resolving tariff-related issues.

Commenting on India’s preparedness, Jaishankar said, “This time, we’re approaching things with a clear sense of urgency. We recognize an opportunity here, and our trade teams are energized and ready.” His remarks reflect India’s strategic intent and assertiveness in securing favorable trade terms with the U.S., EU, and UK.

Looking ahead to the upcoming visit of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Jaishankar added a striking observation: “Nothing is just about trade anymore. Nothing is purely business. Everything has become personal.” The statement underscores the evolving nature of international trade diplomacy, where economic discussions are increasingly interwoven with broader geopolitical dynamics.

The Future of India’s Trade Relationships

As India continues to broaden its trade horizons, the vision set forth by EAM Jaishankar will be pivotal. By actively pursuing trade agreements, India aims to:

  • Boost GDP Growth: Enhancing economic outputs through increased trade flow.
  • Create Jobs: Generating employment opportunities across various sectors.
  • Contribute to Global Supply Chains: Reinforcing India’s role in global trade dynamics.

In conclusion, India’s urgent push for trade deals under EAM Jaishankar represents a critical strategy for enhancing its position in the global economy. With strategic negotiations and an ambitious framework, India is poised to emerge as a significant trade player on the world stage.
