🚨 Global Zoom Outage Disrupts Government Operations and Public Engagement 🚨
A widespread disruption on Wednesday morning caused major setbacks for government meetings across the globe as Zoom, the leading video conferencing platform, went offline for around 30 minutes, starting at 9 a.m. Hawaii time. Over 59,000 users worldwide reported access problems, sparking frustration and delays.
In Honolulu, the City Council had to postpone its full session, while the Hawaii State Ethics Commission cancelled its meeting altogether, citing connectivity issues with the platform.
“We’re unable to provide or submit our testimonies due to the platform crash,” shared Angela Melody Young, an advocate for education and housing.
Councilmember Augie Tulba of District 9 emphasized the heavy dependence on tech:
“This really underlines how reliant we are on digital tools. Once Zoom went down, everything just came to a stop—our meeting couldn’t proceed.“
A notorious hacker group allegedly claimed responsibility, although Zoom stated the outage was caused by internal server difficulties related to domain name resolution problems, and they were actively investigating.

Community advocate Kehaulani Lum, who drove from Aiea to deliver her testimony in person, offered a thoughtful perspective:

“We’ve grown too accustomed to convenience. While online tools let us stay home, they sometimes rob us of real connection. Maybe this incident serves as a wake-up call.“
Despite the disruption, Honolulu City Council chair Tommy Waters reassured the public:
“Our team was ready to activate backup procedures to keep today’s Full Council hearing transparent and inclusive, maintaining our responsibility to the people.“
