China’s Visa Restrictions on US Personnel Amid Tibet Tensions
China announced new visa limitations on select U.S. officials deemed to have “misbehaved” regarding Tibet, according to its foreign ministry on Monday – 14th April 2025. The statement, made during a routine press briefing, follows Washington’s imposition of additional visa bans two weeks earlier on Chinese diplomats linked to regulations controlling foreign access to Tibetan regions.
U.S. authorities have criticized the Chinese Communist Party for allegedly denying U.S. diplomats, journalists, and international observers open access to Tibet and surrounding Tibetan areas. They demand that restrictions be lifted so that U.S. officials and other visitors can freely enter these regions.
Responding to these claims, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that Tibet remains an “internal affair” of China. He contended that the U.S. has abused its authority by targeting Chinese officials with visa restrictions related to Tibet – actions he described as a serious infringement of international law and established norms governing global relations.

Currently, foreign tourists can visit the remote western region of Tibet, but only in organized groups and provided they secure permits in advance. Similarly, diplomats and foreign journalists must obtain clearance from local Tibetan authorities to gain entry.

“Tibet remains accessible. China welcomes genuine visitors and business ventures in the region,” Lin said during the briefing. “However, we firmly oppose any external meddling in Tibetan affairs, especially when it is cloaked under the guise of human rights, religious freedom, or cultural preservation.”
China maintains that it assumed control of Tibet in 1950 via what it terms a “peaceful liberation” from a feudalistic system. In contrast, international human rights organizations and Tibetan exiles have consistently condemned China’s policies in the area as oppressive.
